Catalog ads

How many products do you need for catalog ads (DPA)?

A 9:16 story from the store Northbank Supply: six catalog cards in the same trust strip template, two across and three down, for a candle, a face serum, a running shoe, a knit throw, sunglasses and a lamp, each with its name, price and star rating in a dark side pane

The minimum is small. Meta needs at least 2 unique, valid products for a carousel catalog ad (also called a dynamic product ad, or DPA). A collection ad needs at least 4. But unique and valid are doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Here is what counts, what does not, and how many products you really want.

The Meta minimums

Meta's page on empty or small product sets gives the numbers:

Ad formatMinimum products in the set
Carousel2 unique, valid products
Collection4 unique, valid products

The same page warns that ads "may be paused" if a set falls below the minimum. So the minimum is not only for launch. It has to hold while the ad runs.

What counts as a unique product

Two rules shrink your count.

Variants count as one. Meta says only one variant of the same product displays per ad. A shirt in five colors is one product for this count. Meta's own example: a set of 10 products, where 8 are variants of one item, has only 3 unique products. That is not enough for a collection ad.

Shared images count as one. If several products use the same image, Meta treats them as variants of each other. They count as 1 product.

That second rule catches stores that use one photo for a whole range. Give each product its own main image. Our page on how Shopify photos become Meta catalog images shows how the first photo on each product becomes its main image.

What counts as a valid product

A product only counts if it can show in ads. Meta's page on products not showing lists what stops one:

  • It is out of stock.
  • It is archived.
  • Its image is broken, too small or over 8 MB.
  • It is missing required data or was rejected for policy.

So a set of 6 can drop below 4 in a busy week. Sell out of three items and your collection ad may pause.

How many products you really want

The minimum keeps the ad alive. It does not make it work well.

Meta's product sets page says a broader set "may improve ad performance". It gives the delivery system more options to show each person the right product. The small sets page also recommends a large set to avoid pauses.

For most stores, that means:

  • Start with All products, or one broad set.
  • Split sets only when you have a real reason, like a margin gap or a sale.
  • Keep each set large enough that a few sell outs do not empty it.
  • Check your sets after big catalog changes, like a new season or a clear out.

Meta also advises against editing a product set during a live campaign. It says performance may suffer while the audience updates. So build broad sets up front, then leave them alone.

Our guide to product sets for catalog ads walks through building them.

Catalog ads for a small store

Small stores ask about this the most. The short version: you can run catalog ads with a small catalog, but you have less room for error.

A store with 10 products can still run catalog ads. The ad just has fewer products to rotate. That makes each product image matter more.

With a small catalog, every card is seen often. A plain white square gets old fast. Adding your brand, price and stars to each image helps it stand out. Here is a wallet card from the Northbank Supply sample store.

A brown leather wallet on a cream background with a SAVE 26% badge, a 4.8 star rating, the $58 sale price and a lifestyle photo in the corner

The price, badge and rating are sample data. Convinci's Free plan covers 10 product photos, which fits a small store. See it on your own products in the free preview, and compare plans on the pricing section.

If you have fewer than 4 products, run a carousel or single image ad instead. Our page on catalog ads vs carousel and static ads compares the formats.

Questions

What is the minimum for Meta catalog ads?
Meta needs at least 2 unique, valid products in the product set for carousel ads. Collection ads need at least 4. Below that, the ads may be paused.
Do product variants count toward the minimum?
No. Only one variant of a product shows per ad, so variants of one item count as one product. Products that share the same image also count as one.
Can a small Shopify store run catalog ads?
Yes. You need enough unique, in stock products to meet the minimum for your format. With a small catalog, each image is seen often, so make each one clear and on brand.
Is a bigger product set better?
Meta says a broader set may improve ad performance, since the system has more options for each person. It also recommends a large set so sell outs do not pause your ads.
Why did my catalog ad pause on its own?
Your product set may have dropped below the minimum. Sell outs, image errors or a changed filter can shrink it. Check the set in Commerce Manager and add more products.
